George RR Martin is officially working on fantasy RPG Elden Ring

George RR Martin, the man behind the Game of Thrones books, is officially working on a fantasy video game with From Software

Game of Thrones may have recently left the small screen, but the author of the books that inspired the hit show is now teaming with video game development studio From Software to release a fantasy role-playing game (RPG) known as ‘Elden Ring’.

From Software is the game developer behind the critically acclaimed Souls series, with games such as Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls, Dark Souls 2, and Dark Souls 3 all having incredible success.

Other notable titles by From Software include the standalone Bloodborne and the recently released and highly acclaimed Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

Rumours have been rumbling for some time in the Dark Souls community alleging that From Software has been in talks with George RR Martin – the master penman behind the ‘A Song of Fire and Ice’ book series which inspired the ever-popular Game of Thrones TV series – to develop a fantasy RPG.

These rumours have seemingly found their legs at E3 – one of the world’s largest video games conferences – with the announcement trailer for ‘Elden Ring’.

The trailer teases “A new world created by Hidetaka Miyazaki and George RR Martin” before cutting to a cinematic very much in the mold of the Souls games.

It should be noted that while there may be some fundamental similarities in the mechanics, this will not be a sequel to Dark Souls, Bloodborne, or Sekiro. Though fans can still expect to see the same brutal, challenging, and visceral combat From Software has made a name for itself from.

In an interview with Bandai Namco posted on the Xbox news site, Miyazaki – Game Director at From Software – revealed: “We wanted to create a new dark fantasy action RPG full of things that we weren’t able to do in the Dark Souls series.

“Unlike Sekiro, which has a heavy focus on action, Elden Ring puts more focus on RPG elements. Of course, we are not shying away from the fun of responsive melee-based combat, and these elements will be present as well.”
