Crypto-loving chart topper Rihanna has been given a remarkable job title by the government of Barbados.
The ‘Diamonds’ and ‘Work’ singer – already a proud envoy of her birthplace – has now been appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary.
The 30-year-old singer, whose real name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty, said she was honoured and “couldn’t be more proud” at being given the role which will see her promoting tourism, education and investment.
Patriotism and deep love
After a short ceremony to present the title, Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley praised the work Rihanna had already done for the eastern Caribbean and the Commonwealth.
“Rihanna has a deep love for this country and this is reflected in her philanthropy, especially in the areas of health and education,” she said.
“She also shows her patriotism in the way she gives back to this country and continues to treasure the island as her home.
“She has also demonstrated, beyond her success as a pop icon, significant creative acumen and shrewdness in business. It is therefore fitting that we engage and empower her to play a more definitive role as we work to transform Barbados.”
Born in Saint Michael, near Bridgetown – the island’s capital, she was discovered by US music producers as a teenager. Last year, the street where she grew up was renamed ‘Rihanna Drive’.
Speaking after the presentation in Bridgetown, and using her official title of ‘Ambassador Fenty’, the artist described how honoured she felt to be an integral part of her nation’s future.
“Every Barbadian is going to have to play their role in this current effort, and I’m ready and excited to take on the responsibility,” she said.
“I look forward to working with Prime Minister Mottley and her team to re-imagine Barbados.”
Best-selling artist
With 250 million record sales already under her belt, Rihanna is one of the world’s best-selling artists of all time.
She’s also a big investor and fan of cryptocurrency. In her new role, it likely she’ll also be encouraging the use of blockchain technology to the Government of Barbados.
After being introduced to digital finance by collaborator and producer DJ Khaled who was involved in the much-maligned Centra wallet and ICO, Rihanna is believed to have invested heavily in Bitcoin, Ethereum and several ICOs.
It’s also been rumoured that Rihanna might even launch her own ICO aligned to her successful ‘Fenty Beauty’ makeup and lingerie line.
