Blockchain-based game built with Fortnite engine to launch next month

Project Genesis, a blockchain-based first-person shooter built using the same game engine as Fortnite, is now accepting signups for early game access.

The game is being developed by 8 Circuit Studios, who today announced that closed playtest access will be available from February 1st 2019.

During the testing phase, players will be required to report back to 8 Circuit Studios, providing feedback on how the game could be improved.

Following the end of the playtesting, it is expected that Project Genesis will enter a traditional alpha stage in the summer.

8 Circuit Studios is an indie game developer made up of industry veterans from PC, console, and mobile backgrounds.

John Mayo, “the navigator” of the team, has previously worked on titles such as Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario World, and Age of Empires II.

The game is being developed using the Unreal 4 engine – a renowned game engine that has been used to develop popular titles such as Fortnite, Gears of War 4, and Soul Calibur VI.

The press release by 8 Circuit Studios states that the Unreal 4 engine “is still rare in the blockchain game industry.” To capitalise on this seemingly open market, 8 Circuit Studios will be “utilizing the Ethereum blockchain” to enable game items to “move through a variety of platforms and games.”

The game developer is taking a different approach to the “usual emphasis on ownership to which the crypto community has become accustomed.” 8 Circuit Studios is opting to emphasise attachment and meaning to in-game items, “which will, in turn, instill players with value that is more dynamic.”

In Project Genesis, players will inhabit the mind of an artificial intelligence (AI) support ship that must come to choose between saving the human race or embarking on its own journey. The quest for preservation will see players traverse space and engage in combat to destroy their enemies.

To join the closed playtests, players will need a desktop PC and either a quad-core Intel or AMD processor that is 2.5 GHz or faster. Furthermore, you will also need an NVIDIA GeForce 470 GTX or AMD Radeon 6870 HD graphics card or better.

To apply to become a “Test Pilot,” you will need to submit both an email address on the Project Genesis website and join “the conversation in Discord.”

Test Pilots will be hosted by the development team in small groups and “will be capped based on a limited number of Steam keys and the needs of the developers.”

It would seem as though game developers are increasingly eager to tap into the phenomenal potential of blockchain technology. Recently, Coin Rivet reported that an all-star team of game developers, including the former CEO of Rockstar, will be developing games twinned with blockchain technology.
