Buying Christmas presents for fans of cryptocurrencies can be a little tricky. However, there are a plethora of books that cover the history of cryptography and the theory behind Bitcoin that make perfect stocking fillers. Here are a few suggestions.

Crypto by Steven Levy covers the history of cryptography through the 20th century. Levy highlights the battle that has been waging for over half a century between cryptographers and the US government. Many of the debates we see around encryption now have long been discussed, as Levy highlights. If you want to understand the history of the cryptography movement, then this is the perfect starting point.

An Altcoin Trader’s Handbook by Nik Patel is the perfect gift for someone who’s interested in delving into the volatile markets of cryptocurrencies. Being a successful trader himself, Nik is able to provide expert insight and tutorials for those new to the space or even those who have some experience. Of course, trading comes with a variety of risks, so always do your own research and be careful out there!

Mastering Bitcoin by Andreas Antonopoulos breaks down the programming aspects for any aspiring programmers. For those in the know, this book is a must have. If a friend or family member wants to explore the possibility of coding in the crypto space, then Mastering Bitcoin is the perfect Christmas gift. Andreas has just released Mastering Ethereum recently as well, providing tips and guides on how to work on the Ethereum platform.

This Machine Kills Secrets by Andy Goldberg looks at the history of the Cypherpunk movement. Within, Goldberg looks at the history of Wikileaks, Anonymous, cryptography, and the early days of the Cypherpunk mailing list. Goldberg, a journalist by trade, has spoken to key members of the movement in his time and has extensive knowledge of the space.

As the space continues to evolve, more and more books are beginning to appear on the subject. The above are just a scratch on the service. For those who have family members or friends interested in cryptocurrencies, the above are a good blend of informative and exciting reads.

Ross Chalmers

Ross first discovered Bitcoin as an undergraduate at the University of Sussex in 2013. Since then, the self-confessed Game of Thrones superfan has travelled extensively before returning to academic studies with Leiden University in the Netherlands to complete his MA. His focus was on the philosophies and groups underpinning the Bitcoin movement, Crypto Anarchy and the CypherPunks. As a child, Ross set his heart on one day becoming an F1 driver but nowadays focuses his passion on the high-speed nature of crypto.
