Crypto scammers lure victims with free Tesla Model 3

Cryptocurrency scammers have been trying to lure unsuspecting victims with the promise of a new Tesla Model 3 in return for Bitcoin or Ethereum.

In a fraudulent post on Medium, the scammers posed as computer programmer and businessman John McAfee in an attempt to steal people’s crypto.

“If you send in 2 BTC or 20 ETH, you will get the Grand Prize: a customised Tesla 3 model signatured by John McAfee, delivery included,” the post said.

It’s all above board, honest, guv

The website and account are completely fake, but the scammers have disguised the post as a legitimate Medium page. The post has a lot of comments, saying people will make a real profit. However, it is not possible to leave a comment and most of the existing comments are written in the code.

Some of the links to the website do not work, while those that do are redirected to the Medium home page. According to whois, the domain of the site was registered five days ago.

So far, the wallet addresses promoted in the fraudulent post have not received any funds.

It comes after social network Twitter starting cracking down on crypto scams following research that uncovered a huge botnet that mimics legitimate accounts.
