“We are excited to launch a cryptocurrency donation page for @FreedomofPress, where we can now accept Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash, and Zcash to support press freedom,” says the FPF in a tweet. “A huge thank you to @Mainframe_HQ, who is helping kick off our cryptocurrency donation page with a donation of 1000 ETH! We are thrilled @Mainframe_HQ shares our goal of protecting journalists and whistleblowers in the digital age.” The thousand ETH is currently valued at about $500,000 (£379,975).
According to the organisation, the donations will help support non-profit projects such as SecureDrop, a whistleblower platform that allows journalists to anonymously receive messages and send documents.
The California-based FPF is also helping the US Press Freedom Tracker, a website committed to keeping documented track of attacks on freedom of the press in the US. It also sponsors Signal, the encrypted phone call and text message app.
