Secondo quanto riferito, Citigroup sta sviluppando un modo meno rischioso di cartolarizzare le criptovalute che lo metterebbe all'avanguardia negli sforzi di Wall Street per consentire ai clienti di investire in un mercato in gran parte non regolamentato.
Fonti vicine ai piani di Citigroup aggiungono che la banca intende sfruttare una versione del tradizionale strumento finanziario noto come American Depository Receive (ADR) per Bitcoin creando la Digital Asset Receive (DAR).
«Le azioni estere sono detenute da una banca, che poi emette la ricevuta di deposito», affermano fonti anonime. «In questo caso, la criptovaluta è detenuta da un custode e Citigroup emette il DAR.»
I nuovi piani significano che Citigroup intende agire come agente emittente dei DAR per consentire il trading tramite proxy, il che è meno rischioso in quanto consente agli investitori di acquistare Bitcoin senza possedere effettivamente alcun BTC, spiegano le fonti.
Il nuovo regime è concepito per rientrare nel quadro normativo esistente, fornendo agli investitori un mezzo relativamente sicuro per negoziare la criptovaluta.

I portavoce del Citigroup hanno rifiutato di commentare i piani, inizialmente rivelati da Business Insider.
I dirigenti della sede centrale di Citigroup a New York, che all'inizio di quest'anno hanno impedito ai propri clienti di utilizzare le proprie carte di credito per acquistare Bitcoin, vedono le ricevute come uno dei modi migliori per portare gli investitori tradizionali a Bitcoin.
