Moscow to become a transparent city through blockchain

Moscow – Russia’s capital and largest city – has been looking into the possibility of using blockchain technology to improve and digitise the city’s administrative services in both its state and commercial structures.

The local government’s “Smart City” project has set out a number of objectives to help Moscow transform into a digital economy by 2030.

Both blockchain and artificial intelligence (AI) will play key roles in the city’s digital development plans.

Transforming Moscow

Development work has been taking place in Moscow over the last decade to improve its underlying infrastructure. New technologies and modern solutions have been implemented to improve the daily lives of citizens and guests of the Russian capital.

As the most populated city in Europe, the government is keen to continue adding cutting-edge technologies and developments to help the city thrive and cope as it continues to grow.

The city hosts the federal government, embassies of foreign states, and head offices of the largest Russian and international companies. It has six airports and nine railway stations and operates 24/7.

Blockchain technology has emerged as a key component to help improve the processes of the city and further develop its infrastructure to make life easier for everybody there.

Moscow and blockchain

Moscow has been very receptive to new technologies such as blockchain. More and more blockchain events are being held in Moscow, such as the hugely popular Blockchain Life.

12 million people live permanently in Moscow and 5-6 million move in and out of the city every day. With such huge numbers, blockchain technology could become a solution to many problems.

For example, it can help streamline and reduce the costs of transport services as well as make it easier for citizens to pay for utility bills, council tax, medical services, parking fines, and more.

Moscow is also looking to implement blockchain voting to allow citizens to vote on city matters. Citizens will vote on an independent and transparent blockchain platform where they themselves can help manage the city and share their opinions.

With the help of blockchain technology, the trust of citizens in government will increase significantly as they will be able to see the results of votes for themselves safe in the knowledge that blockchain is immutable and the data cannot be altered by corrupt parties.

Blockchain helps fight corruption and can bring people together around the idea of improving life in the city.

The “Smart City” project

Blockchain technology is perfect for solving many tasks in a big city. Blockchain can help the city improve its services and will make processes more transparent, inspiring trust and confidence in the population.

Moscow is continuing to develop more new projects based on blockchain technology as part of the Smart City 2030 project.

The goal of the project is to make blockchain popular among citizens and introduce this technology into a number of everyday services to help streamline processes.

The project will help create a comfortable, safe living environment for everyone in Moscow.

As part of the project, the city’s health system now includes electronic registration, a single database of information, and full histories of each patient.

When forming the system, global trends, expert advice, and the opinions and ideas of Moscow residents were taken into account.

The Smart City program will ensure sustainable development of the quality of life, a favourable business environment, transparent and centralised city management, and a reduction of government spending through digital technologies.

Some of the goals of the project include:

  • Ensuring a quality and happy life for all citizens.
  • Open digital government – the participation of citizens in the management of the city.
  • The development of artificial intelligence to create a barrier-free environment.
  • The fostering of a comfortable environment for the development of any business.
  • The introduction of digital documentation to replace paper.
  • The use of a distributed registry and cyber security.
  • The development of green digital technology to boost sustainability and help care for the environment.

Moscow is actively developing as a metropolis using all the technological advancements of the modern world – including blockchain.

Over the past 10 years, investment in the city has doubled and many international companies have opened their representative offices in the capital of Russia.

It seems as though Moscow’s goal to become a transparent city through blockchain could be achieved very soon, and it looks primed to become one of the most innovative cities in the world.
