AMC Theatres accept the purchase of e-gift cards with crypto

Following up on its plans to accept cryptocurrency as payment for tickets, AMC Theatres is debuting the purchase of digital gift cards with cryptocurrency.

Cryptos such as Bitcoin and Dogecoin will be accepted as payment for the digital gift card as CEO of AMC Theatres, Adam Aron, announced on Twitter.

Dogecoin is certainly a favourite of Aron who revealed in September that AMC Theatres would look to support Dogecoin payments by 2020.

Bitcoin, Litecoin, Ethereum, and Bitcoin Cash are the other four cryptocurrencies that Aron said will likely be used as payment for movie tickets.

While Aron looks determined to make the usage of cryptocurrency a normality, the move hasn’t been without critics.

Ipek Ozkardeskaya, senior analyst at Swissquote Bank, questioned the viability of the regular use of cryptocurrency.

“People are not buying Bitcoin to spend them,” Ozkardeskaya said.

“For me, it’s still not a nicely established currency in the sense that it’s more of an investment for the future or for something that we may want to have in the future.”

Despite the critics, Aron and AMC Theatres look determined in their quest to make cryptocurrency an established form of payment.
