In the first project of its kind, Polkadot (DOT) is inviting users to vote on the blockchain’s future branding. The project is an example of DOTs governance system and decentralised social coordination.
DOT, the flagship project of the Web3 Foundation, is a decentralised web that “facilitates an internet where independent blockchains can exchange information and transactions in a trustless way via the Polkadot relay chain”.
This rebranding project stays true to the decentralised goal of DOT. The stewards of the branding project were chosen by DOT holders and are the result of a long roadmap developed by users and developers alike.
Ignasi Albero, the internal brand manager at the Web3 Foundation noted that “branding is traditionally a very centralised affair, one company defines everything and it’s thrown at its community”.
“This paradigm is not particularly compatible with brands of decentralised blockchain networks—the community should be at the starting point and they should be empowered with flexible brand tools to use, not rigid brand rulebooks to follow.”
The vote consists of two different website design choices and two logo choices, both developed by the design studio Koto.
Discussing the innovative approach taken by DOT, Rosie Connors, the client director at Koto said:”The process we’ve been through so far has been unlike any other project we’ve ever worked on, and the Koto team has learned so much about Polkadot’s technology and the world of blockchain along the way.
“As the brand is ultimately owned by the community, we’re excited to release the two territories we’ve been working on to see which people respond to most.”
Dot holders can vote on the branding here. The vote closes on November 5.
