Liverpool City Council has signed a partnership with the Poseidon Foundation to make Liverpool the world’s first climate positive city by 2020.
“Poseidon’s technology offsets the carbon impact of any product or service by transparently supporting essential forest conservation projects, allowing individuals, organisations and governments to reverse the impact of climate change every day through their activities,” said a joint statement.
Based on the agreement, Poseidon’s technology will be put to the test over the next 12 months during which the foundation will work with local schools, universities and businesses to develop educational programmes around the climate impact.
“I’m delighted we have signed this partnership agreement with Poseidon to connect Liverpool directly with climate positive projects across the globe,” said Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson.
Poseidon CEO Laszlo Giricz added: “This is a ground-breaking partnership, not just for Poseidon and Liverpool, but globally. For the first time, a city will use blockchain technology to go beyond re-balancing its carbon footprint – leading the way in the fight against climate change.”
The blockchain firm is currently working with Liverpool company BAC Mono to create the world’s first climate positive automobile.
Liverpool’s City Council has set itself a target to cut its carbon emissions by 40% before 2030, which is equivalent to protecting 136 million trees or 338,000 football fields in the Peruvian Amazon.
