Opera enables users to purchase Ethereum directly through browser

Internet browser Opera is now making inroads into the cryptocurrency space with the announcement that it will allow users to purchase Ethereum directly through the platform.

The Scandinavian company has partnered with regulated crypto brokerage Safello, who will provide the cash-to-crypto exchange.

Users will be able to purchase Ethereum with credit and debit cards as well as with a number of payment providers. However, the update is limited to users in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark.

Opera’s crypto product lead Charles Hamel said: “We think that the next important phase for crypto will come from usage, and that for it to reach wider adoption, it has to be easy to buy and easy to use.”

The company claims that topping up a wallet with Ether will take “less than a minute,” with customers in Sweden being offered a 2.5% discount of fees, while users residing in Norway or Denmark will receive 5%.

Opera posted a one-minute promotional video about the update to Twitter, claiming that the partnership with Safello will integrate renowned Swedish payments processor “Swish” as well as an automatic ID check via BankID.

Sweden has been touted as a nation that will be one of the first to adopt a “cashless society,” with less than 1% of all transactions taking place with traditional banknotes or coins.
