Cryptocurrencies

My platform is to help other artists, says Dylan Rhodes

Crypto-rapper Dylan ‘Dyl’ Rhodes, says the importance of creating a community around crypto-music is paramount.

Cryptocurrency has become globally popular and entered many forms of popular culture and entertainment such as sports, films and art.

Dyl saw a gap in the music industry that cryptocurrency could fill and he capitalised on it.

The rapper released his debut album – ‘Crypto Rich’ – in 2019, in what was one of the world’s first crypto-inspired albums and, in an interview with BeinCrypto, he discussed his mission and how the NFT space in music differed from the norm.

“This is about showing everyone the world of crypto in a way that’s understandable, by just listening to a hip hop album, which is also really dope music,” he said.

What’s so cool about the NFT integration is that it allows me to get funding directly from my fans.”

Dyl takes aim at artists who see a venture into the NFT music space purely for its monetary benefits rather than building a long-term project.

I see a lot of artists coming to the space and essentially looking at it as more of a cash grab,” he expressed.

“The future of music and NFTs is artists [to] own their music, artists are building their own, self-directed communities.”

The new era of music

The progression from physical CD sales to online streaming was a massive change for artists to earn money, but not necessarily a better one.

In May, 150 musicians called for legislation to better financially protect musicians in an era where online streaming doesn’t provide the same income for artists that CDs once did.

Arabian Prince – a founding member of one of hip-hop’s most famous groups, NWA – said it was common practice for music artists to not receive money they are legally entitled to earn from their music, and the introduction of blockchain will help curb the problem.
