Twitch streamer Sick_Nerd received a 20 Bitcoin (approximately £57,000) donation from one of his viewers whilst playing Old School Runescape.
Twitch.tv is a live streaming video platform and a subsidiary of Amazon. It is one of the world’s most popular sites, drawing in an average of 140 million unique monthly viewers, 15 million daily users, and 2.2 million monthly broadcasters. Amazon purchased the behemoth streaming platform in 2014 for a staggering $970 million.
The platform is most commonly used to live stream video games. It is thought that roughly 241 billion minutes worth of gaming content has been broadcast on Twitch.
A streamer under the name of Sick_Nerd was playing Runescape, a massive multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), when the donation occurred. Sick_Nerd is a verified streamer who has been active for five years, and in that time he has garnered a following of over 100,000 people.
During his stream, user lightpuma donated the gamer a whopping 20 Bitcoin, which at the time was valued at around £57,000.
Following the generous donation, Sick_Nerd took to Twitter to give his appreciation, stating: “Thank you to my mystery benefactor, whoever you are, genuinely a life changing amount of money that I or nobody deserves but look what happened. Crazy.”
The donation was made possible by StreamLabs, a technology start-up company based in San Francisco. They build tools that enable live streamers to receive donations in the form of cryptocurrency and by default, grants them the ability to further monetise and grow their channels.
