When Emelia Earhart stepped out of her Lockheed Vega in the middle of a field in Culmore, Northern Ireland, clutching a copy of the Newfoundland Telegraph-Journal she’d been given earlier that day, she changed the world.
It was 1932, and the world was finally beginning to wake up to the true potential of women in society. It was a glorious era in which people like Earhart were riding a post-suffragette wave to showcase how women could be stronger, faster, go further and achieve much more than the male-dominated pages of history had echoed for centuries.
As she stood by the huge red wheel fairings of the aircraft she had just flown non-stop for more than 2,000 miles she was approached by a bemused farmhand who asked: “Have you flown far?”
Statuesque, smeared with oil, but largely unruffled from almost 15 hours of battling winds and mechanical failure, her face broke into a beaming smile as she replied: “From America.”
Right there. That was the watershed moment. She announced not only her arrival as the first female pilot to fly solo across the Atlantic, but she heralded the arrival of women in a man’s world.
She broke the boundaries which had, for so long, been out of reach.
Since that time, more and more boundaries have been smashed.
We’ve led governments, climbed Everest, captained missions into space, won Oscars and pioneered medical science. Moreover, we have been the driving force behind many technological revolutions which have shaped modern society.
Now, here we are, standing on the edge of a new technological revolution… blockchain. And the female touch is everywhere in this space. Throughout every operation and implementation of this tech there are some brilliant women doing brilliant things – and that’s what we’re going to celebrate here at Coin Rivet with our “Women In Blockchain” campaign. We’re going to bring you the stories of those women: their remarkable achievements, successes and thoughts.
Let’s face it, the very idea behind how blockchain operates is entirely suited to how the female mind works. Blocks of information are stored away permanently as a new block is added over and over again with more complex and improved information which is shared only in the spirit of trust and with others who must come to an agreement with the ‘consensus’, literally. It is a monumental leap in the way data can be processed, and is quite clearly something only the mind of a natural multi-tasker can both behold or indeed comprehend.
The entire concept of blockchain appears wholly unable to have been devised by anyone other than a woman! I jest, of course.
I take my hat off to every woman getting their hands dirty in this industry, pushing its – and indeed their own – limits, as we all do our best to see just what it is capable of and where it will take us.
Our time in blockchain right now is very much like Emelia Earhart as she stared out from the cockpit on the runway of Harbour Grace in Newfoundland 86 years ago. The ambition, drive, fear and anticipation must have been burning deep within.
This technology is about to take off, and women are very much in the driving seat.
Stay tuned, and let us tell you all about it.
