World’s first decentralised VPN project launches app for Android

The Mysterium Network has launched an app that will enable users to take part in the world’s first decentralised blockchain VPN. The app was released yesterday and is now available on Android, Windows, and macOS.

The app is powered by the “OpenVPN protocol, which is an open source commercial software that implements virtual privacy techniques to create secure point-to-point or site-to-site connections in routed or bridged configurations and remote access facilities.”

The post on Mysterium’s site states: “Our mission is to build a P2P decentralised network using multi-hops, relays, and an inbuilt micropayments tokenomic model.”

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network, and they function by allowing users to securely access a private network and then share data in a remote and private way. VPNs can also mask your IP address by granting users a new IP from the service provider.

The implications of Mysterium’s project could be huge. VPN’s previously were typically run on a centralised server depending on the VPN provider, so moving this process to the blockchain and making it decentralised will add further layers of security and privacy for VPN users.

Mysterium claim their aim is to make a name for themselves in the world of decentralisation, with “all source code” being “visible” on their platform.
