Zuckerberg defends Libra: social media roundup

Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg appeared before the US House of Representatives yesterday to defend the Libra cryptocurrency amid regulatory scrutiny.

The polarising figure has been met with waves of criticism surrounding both the social media platform and its plans to release the crypto project.

While the hearing was intended to dissect Libra, Congress took it upon themselves to grill the controversial figure on Facebook.

Unsurprisingly, the social media reactions to Zuckerberg’s hearing were filled with plenty of people ridiculing the head honcho.

Perhaps the most common insult towards him was commentary on the CEO’s haircut.

Mark Zuckerberg is a billionaire but cuts his own hair using an IKEA cereal bowl,” observed one commentator.

During the hearing it was abundantly clear that the social media pioneer hadn’t adequately prepared for the questions thrown his way.

One Twitter user was swift to point this out, noting: “I’m trying to decide if Mark Zuckerberg was just not prepared or he’s really not all that bright to begin with.”

Speaking on the intense grilling, another watcher remarked “remember when all those congresswomen murdered Zuckerberg?”.

Others took to calling out the Facebook CEO for his betrayal on the Winklevoss twins.

“Somewhere the Winklevoss twins are like, “WE’VE BEEN TELLING YOU ****S THAT ZUCKERBERG IS TRASH FOR OVER A DECADE!” exclaimed one beguiled user.

While Libra was getting slammed left, right and centre, altcoin enthusiasts took the chance to promote their favourite cryptocurrency.  The #XRPArmy didn’t waste their opportunity…

Alarmingly, one of the key takeaways from the Libra side of the hearing was how little Mark Zuckerbergs appeared to know about how many organisations in the Libra Association were led by women.

Perhaps the darkest side to emerge from yesterday’s events was how Zuckerberg subtly hinted at how Libra could be “wielded as a weapon of empire”, at least according to one social media user.

Continuing on a similar train of thought when it comes to manipulation, someone else pointed out how Facebook has the power to ban a user from posting on the platform – and if it can do that, it could also control people’s Libra wallets.

Likewise, Congressman Brad Sherman shared a similar opinion even going so far as to call Libra the ‘ZuckBuck’.
