Bitcoin ABC adds 10-block reorg protection to entice exchanges

Bitcoin ABC is upgrading its nodes to protocol version 0.18.5. This includes 'deep' reorg protection

Bitcoin ABC has released a software upgrade to defend against reorg attacks. It hopes the move will give confidence to exchanges to open up withdrawal and deposits for Bitcoin ABC.

We have so far not seen any covert malicious miners attempting to reorg either of the ABC or SV chains. The closest we got was a self-inflicted 2 block reorg of the SV chain after its blockchain suffered issues with block propagation.

It has been said that part of the issues for the SV chain relates to its incessant pursuit of larger blocks.

It’s been reported that SV blocks are taking longer than 10 mins to propagate in some occasions (longer than the target block time). Yesterday Coin Rivet brought you further details on the latest SV drama.

The ABC camp has announced that “this release adds deep reorg protection to ensure that transactions are immutable after 10 confirmations”.

Andreas Antonopoulos has questioned this statement by adding: “Reorg protection at 10 blocks?”. A 10 block wait time is already 1 hour 40 mins, exchanges may also choose to add additional confirmation on top of this. Compare this to Bitcoin where most exchanges confirm within 1 to 3 blocks (10 to 30 mins).”

Looking to secure the BCH brand

ABC is hoping to take the mantle of the ‘Bitcoin Cash’ brand and most importantly BCH ticker.

It is hoping the upgrade will help “safeguard users, businesses, and exchanges stay secure and free from disruption.”. Or at least pave the way for a move to the next crypto drama.
