Chess.com has become the latest Brave-verified publisher and now allows users to earn Basic Attention Tokens (BAT) for watching advertisements.
Chess.com is an online platform where users can compete against each other in games of chess. It has over 27 million members signed up.
The site also offers other features such as online tutorials and lessons to help newcomers learn how to play.
The Brave browser is a free and open source web browser based on Chromium. It currently has support for Windows, MacOS, Linux, Android, and IOS.
The aim of Brave is to remove any intrusive third-party advertisements and trackers and give users the option to opt-in to see ads.
The Basic Attention Token (BAT) is based on the Ethereum blockchain and is used in conjunction with the Brave browser. The browser measures user activities and rewards them based on the attention they give to advertisements.
Publishers receive more revenue through using Brave because middlemen and fraud are reduced while users are rewarded for their attention, creating a dynamic where both the publisher and user win.
The concept behind BAT goes further than advertisements – Coinbase Learning allows users to earn BAT tokens for engaging with educational content.
The news surfaced on Reddit where user bat-chriscat uploaded a post displaying an image of Chess.com with a BAT wallet.
The image shows that users can now view their BAT balance alongside their attention percentage. Users will also be able to send tips using BAT.
It is unclear if users will be able to earn BAT tokens through engaging with Chess.com’s tutorials or if they will only be able to earn through paying attention to advertisements they opt-in for.
