Malta becomes first country to put all education certifications on blockchain

Malta is continuing to live up to its name as the ‘Blockchain Island’ by becoming the first nation to put all education certificates on the blockchain, according to Malta Today.

The innovative initiative by the Mediterranean island is spearheaded by blockchain start-up Learning Machine, which has signed a two-year contract with the Maltese government.

Under the new contract, all secondary education certificates will be issued on the blockchain, meaning that they will be entirely verified and tamperproof.

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, who has been a keen advocate for blockchain technology since his re-election in 2017, praised the project during a signing ceremony at his office in Castille.

“In 2017, we said Malta will become the Blockchain Island, and it has,” Muscat said, before claiming that the initiative will help minimise bureaucracy and safeguard students’ private data.

Malta’s digital economy parliamentary secretary Silvio Schembri, who is a prominent figure in the Maltese blockchain community, announced that a second wave of scholarships on the blockchain would be announced on Monday.

Schembri will be speaking alongside the prime minister during May’s Blockchain and AI Summit in Malta, which Coin Rivet will be attending following a spectacular conference last year.
