MetaMask announces public beta of mobile app

MetaMask – an incredibly popular browser plugin used to access Ethereum-based dApps – has announced the launch of a public beta version of its new mobile app.

The MetaMask plugin serves as a bridge which enables users to visit the “distributed web of tomorrow” in their browsers. It allows users to run Ethereum-based decentralised applications (dApps) without needing to run a full Ethereum node.

Gods Unchained – a blockchain-based trading card game – is one example of an application that users can access through their web browser with MetaMask. Compatible browsers include Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, and the Brave browser.

MetaMask also includes a secure identity vault, providing a handy user interface to manage identities on different sites and sign blockchain transactions.

According to a Medium blog post by the development team, the public beta of the MetaMask mobile application – which was first announced nine months ago – is now ready to launch.

“Over the next couple of months, we’ll use this beta to gather feedback from the community before our V1 (version 1) launch this fall,” the post reads.

The mobile app will have the functionality to sync with its web browser counterpart by scanning a QR code. This means users will be able to sync their entire MetaMask wallet (accounts, nicknames, tokens, and transaction history) with the mobile app and will have access to all their information on the go.

Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are a hugely important aspect of blockchain gaming and crypto collectibles. As such, the mobile app will allow users to manage, send, and receive Ether, ERC-20, and ERC-721 tokens from their wallet.

It will also boast instant and free payments (gasless fees) through its payment channels via Connext. The only exception to this is the initial deposit and withdrawal from the payment channel.
