The start of the 2021 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament on Monday marked an important step in the development and adoption of cryptocurrencies in Africa.
As part of the industry’s expansion into Africa, Binance – the leading global cryptocurrency exchange – has become the exclusive cryptocurrency and blockchain sponsor for the AFCON 2021 tournament.
The sponsorship deal will see Binance become an official partner with the Confederation of African Football (CAF), as the exchange looks to bring its “global brand and technology to African football”.
In addition, the sponsorship deal will involve Binance in the curation of daily social media content throughout the tournament, which includes segments such as ‘Assist of the Day’, ‘Binance Assist of the Week’ and ‘Binance Assist of the Tournament’.
An integral part of the exchange’s mission to “drive blockchain adoption” and provide “greater access to financial services for the world’s unbanked”, Binance has been influential in providing free educational resources and education classes throughout Africa on cryptocurrencies and blockchains.
So far, Binance has supported more than 54o,000 Africans across the continent since 2020 on an array of topics including user protection, online safety and building a career in blockchain.
Kicking off on Sunday January 9 and hosted in Cameroon, more than 160 nations will live broadcast the tournament to an estimated global audience of more than 300 million.
Veron Mosengo-Omba, CAF’s General Secretary, said he hoped the partnership would further drive crypto adoption across Africa.
“I am delighted to welcome Binance as an official sponsor of the AFCON tournament this year. Through this partnership with CAF, Binance will connect further with its users and the African community through football,” he said.
“CAF is ready to embrace blockchain-based technology and its impact on the future of African football development. I am certain that together with Binance, we can take African football to a new level.”
