The price of BTC dropped 73% in 2018

2018 was a torrid year for cryptocurrencies. The price of Bitcoin (BTC) dropped an astonishing 73% since it opened at $13,850.50 on January 1st, 2018. It closed on December 31st, 2018 at $3,709.50.

Despite the hammering the BTC price took over 2018, it is still the biggest, most well known, and most widely traded cryptocurrency around. It is the largest of the top 10 cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation.

About Bitcoin

In August 2008, the domain name bitcoin.org was registered. On October 31st, 2008, a paper was published called “Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System”. This was authored by Satoshi Nakamoto, the inventor of Bitcoin. To date, no one knows who this person, or people, are.

The paper outlined a method of using a P2P network for electronic transactions without “relying on trust”. On January 3rd, 2009, the Bitcoin network came into existence. Nakamoto mined block number “0” (or the “genesis block”), which had a reward of 50 Bitcoins.
