Which blockchain games are looking most promising in 2019?

Blockchain games are really starting to take off. Since the inception of the genre with CryptoKitties, they have transcended past the novel idea of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and owning an item forever and now look set to start disrupting the mainstream gaming industry.

More and more blockchain games are emerging each day, and it can be hard to know which ones are worth keeping an eye on. Here is a list of Coin Rivet’s most promising blockchain games in 2019.

Whether you’re a fan of first-person shooters, fantasy role-playing games, sports games, or even trading card games, there’s something on this list for you.

Age of Rust

Age of Rust is just one of the many blockchain games to be part of Enjin’s Multiverse – an infinite amount of gaming universes which all coexist. Items from one game will be usable in another, demonstrating the true power of non-fungible tokens.

US developer SpacePirate Games has been working on the development of the game since mid-2017. It is a post-apocalyptic and dark sci-fi game where the player is tasked with exploring abandoned space stations and mysterious caverns. While on their journey, the player will unlock puzzles and secrets to guide them further into the ever-expansive Age of Rust universe.

The player will also have the chance to earn crypto-items and cryptocurrency while solving puzzles. This twinned with its inclusion in the Multiverse makes it a promising game to keep an eye out for.

Chainmonsters.io

While Age of Rust is a sci-fi game with stunning graphics, Chainmonsters.io is a blockchain game that revels in nostalgia.

Inspired by the classic Japanese role-playing game series Pokémon, Chainmonsters looks to reinvent the old into something new. Underpinned by blockchain technology, it truly entwines classic nostalgia with modern day tech.

Its beta launched around March 2019 and it has undergone several updates since, showing the developer is keen to make it as polished as it can be.

The player is tasked with choosing a staring ‘Mon’ before embarking on a journey to catch, train, and battle with other people and Mons.

Not only is it an RPG, but it is also a massively multiplayer online (MMO) game – meaning you can play with your friends online.

Each Mon is stored on the blockchain and is associated with the player’s Ethereum wallet address. There is even the option to buy and sell Mons for Ether.

Cryptic Conjure

Cryptic Conjure is a multiplayer fantasy-action RPG based on the Ethereum blockchain and built using the Unreal game engine.

Back in March 2019, its initial client was released with a tutorial dungeon, the hub town of Rathe, and one dungeon playable from start to finish. In April 2019, a second dungeon was released alongside the public launch.

You play as an adventurer from a far-away land with a lot of latent potential – both the prevailing political party of Kyra and the resistance see you as a valuable asset. As you delve into the game, a mysterious voice speaks to you, imploring you to explore the elemental dungeons.

Cryptic Conjure has an intuitive spell-crafting system and makes apt use of blockchain and smart contract technology – meaning seasoned veterans can earn money through playing the game.

Gods Unchained

Gods Unchained is a card trading game not too dissimilar from the massively popular Hearthstone game. It has already started and finished its closed beta. It is partnered with CryptoKitties and even has investment from popular crypto exchange Coinbase.

The player will be able to purchase packs and build up their deck before challenging other players to duels.

It has huge emphasis on competitive play, whether that be through a battle royale or a World Championship.

The World Championship itself has an ever-growing prize pool, though the only way to enter is with a Championship ticket. The current prize pool sits at $429,484. 10% of pack sales go directly to the first World Championship prize pool, with a goal of $1.6 million.

MLB Champions

MLB Champions is one of the most widely talked about blockchain games because it is partnered with Major League Baseball (MLB).

It is designed as a collectible card trading experience that is driven by real-life MLB games and includes crypto representations of all current MLB players.

The player is tasked with picking a team with their cards and predicting what they think will happen in that team’s next game. The player earns points based on the real-life performance of the team and the player cards chosen.

The player can choose up to 21 players – nine starting players, six players on the bench, and six bullpen pitchers.

Neon District

Neon District is a sci-fi RPG developed using the Unity game engine. The game utilises the Loom Network which will store player items, though trading occurs on the Ethereum mainnet. The player is tasked with controlling parties of in-game characters to battle and progress through the game’s sprawling narrative and collect non-fungible tokens.

The developers recently hosted an auction for the ‘season zero’ boss known as Baus, which was sold for a remarkable 141 Ether – worth $22,500 at the time of the sale.

Project Genesis

Project Genesis is a deep-space first-person shooter game developed by 8 Circuit Studios. It is also part of the company’s ‘Metaverse’ collection of blockchain games.

The player wakes up as an artificial intelligence (AI) inhabitant. They will then be tasked with taking down enemy ‘capital ships’ by destroying the shields of the capital ships in space combat. From there, the player can infiltrate the ship – transitioning smoothly into first person.

The game has its own store which relies on the 8 Bit token and can be traced on Etherscan.

The in-game assets will use the ERC-20 and ERC-721 standards to enable items to have interoperability between other Metaverse games.

Reality Clash

Reality Clash is already out for iOS and Android devices in most parts of the world. It is a virtual reality-based (VR) first-person shooter.

Its narrative heavily borrows from the cryptosphere, with the blockchain phenomenon having began in 2008 with an unknown entity known as Satoshi Nakamoto. Billions of cryptographic calculations have been made to resolve each block – though an individual hacker discovered the ‘Multis’.

The hacker uploaded an avatar of their physical form through an access node and started to build a new world called ‘The Sim’. The player is tasked with fighting for control of The Sim against other players.

The Six Dragons

The Six Dragons is another fantasy RPG, though this one is the first to have successfully integrated blockchain tech using Enjin’s software development kit.

A gameplay demo has shown how seamless it will be to obtain an item in-game and have it immediately stored in the player’s Enjin wallet. It will feature crafting and enchanting – through which the player can upgrade their items, raising the value.

While it is predominately a single-player game, it will also feature MMO aspects such as ‘world bosses’ that will require groups of players to band together in order to defeat them.

Eventually, the game will enable the player to become a merchant of sorts for crafting and enchanting – meaning they can sell their services to other players.

9Lives Arena

9Lives Arena is yet another fantasy RPG – though this one has specific emphasis on player-versus-player (PVP) combat. As its name suggests, the player will have nine lives before having to create a new character. It is also part of Enjin’s Multiverse.

Deceased characters will have a statue erected in the arena, decked out in the armour and weapons the player had acquired before the character died.

It is also advertised as a cross-platform game, which should mean players on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation will be able to battle each other.

It also has a ‘blueprint‘ mechanic where the player can craft unique items, and if the item is rare enough, they can sell it on the marketplace. This is an intriguing concept that many will be attracted to rather than having to purchase packs to obtain unique loot.
